Balanced Rock
a foundation for inspired learning
Overview
We are the water moving in the rivers, the stones forming canyons, mountain ranges and flat lands. We are the trees and plants and animals that move with the sun and seasons. We are the inhabitants of this canyon and beyond. Balanced Rock is stones perched in a delicate and improbable fashion surrounded by water, air and earth. We are the impermanence of these balanced rocks, life and these moments. Balanced Rock is being in the now, while creating opportunities for future inhabitants to experience their now. It is listening and learning from history to remember our connections to the earth.

Our History

Heather Sullivan, visionary and program director, and Eliza Kerr, president of the board of directors, founded Balanced Rock in 2007. Board member Marcia Hodges and staff member Schuyler Greenleaf have been invaluable in this organization's creation. Balanced Rock evolved from Wild Women Workshops, which used the tools of yoga and creative writing within wilderness trips to encourage women to foster self expression, empowerment and exploration. The highly successful trips demonstrated the need to open the organization to growth in an ever-changing world.

Balanced Rock programming includes some elements from the former organization such as all women trips and wilderness trips that include yoga, reflection and creative expression. Balanced Rock is open to all individuals. We have created community programs and hope to expand these as needs arise and change. Our aim is to do work that encourages people to "unplug" from the world of technology for a few moments or days while plugging back into the earth that sustains us. From here we can remember how to sustain ourselves and the earth while seeking a balance in our daily lives. Our history runs deep.
